“The Movement of Women Journalists Against Violence”

“The Movement of Women Journalists Against Violence” is a movement of Arab female journalists from various regions. The movement was established in 2019, with the support of the Hans Seidel Foundation, when the number of violent deaths in Arab society reached 93, among them were 11 women.

The movement’s goal is to establish a group of female media professionals who will take a role in combating crime and violence in general, and against women in particular. The movement’s work began with the creation of the first guide to “gender-friendly and sensitive journalism”, which included research conducted with journalists and victims of violence on media coverage. The guide provided instructions on how to cover gender-sensitive issues in the hope that journalists would actively work to better the status of women.
Later, and in order to establish this type of journalism and raise the awareness of fellow journalists, the movement produced the first promotional video explaining the necessity of using the guide.
During 2020 and 2021, the movement continued with the work, including introducing fellow journalists to the guide, and organizing a special meeting with advertisers to guide them on how to create gender-sensitive ads, especially since journalists claim that advertisers negatively affect the patterns of media coverage.

Today, the movement includes 18 female journalists, from various media outlets in Israel, whether written, audio, or television. Among the female journalists in the movement: Kholoud Masalha - Chief editor of "Bakra" website and director of the I’lam center, which provides administrative support, Yasmine Abed - program producer on Al-Shams Radio, Nahid Derbas - journalist for Al-Araby Al-Jadeed website published in London, Heba Zoabi - journalist and editor-in-chief of I24 and other female journalists.
